Illumination Modelling: Quartz Halogen Bulb

A specific quartz halogen bulb was being considered for an ophthalmic illumination system. Alternate metal halide technologies were also being considered. The spatial light distribution, spectrum and coupling requirements of each of the proposed sources were of particular interest. The reflector bulb was modeled and assigned appropriate optical characteristics. The diagrams show the raytrace model and resultant light distribution on the imaging surface.

With this information, an informed decision can be made regarding the optical coupling into subsequent fiber optic components. The original application maintained halogen technology but gave birth to alternate products using metal halide technology.
